I’m not proud and I’m proud!

Being proud of being or liking something is stupid.

Most definitions of being proud of something come from an event of accomplishment of some kind (the other definitions tend to play toward arrogance). You scored high on a test, you should be proud of your work! Your team won the game, you should be proud of you and your team’s accomplishment. You raised your child into a hard working, sensible adult, you should be proud of your good parenting.

I don’t understand the phrase “I(‘m) (a) _____ and I’m proud!”

Fill in the blank with just about anything and it sounds ridiculous.

“I like Powerpuff Girls and I’m proud!”
Okay, so your brain happens to get a kick out of Powerpuff Girls. Good for you, why are you proud of that? What’d you do to accomplish this liking of the show? You happen to have a taste that the show relates to, and so you like it. You didn’t do anything yourself, you just found the show and said “oh hey, I like this.”

“I’m black/white/Asian/<insert ethnicity or nationality> and I’m proud!”
You didn’t do anything to become black, or white, or whatever you are. Why are you proud of this? I’m white, I’m not proud. It’s not because of anything my supposed general grouping of ethnic backgrounds has or hasn’t done or is doing, it’s because I was born white. I didn’t accomplish anything to become white. I have no reason to be “proud” of being white.

“I’m a (wo)man and I’m proud!”
Disregarding sex change, you were born a man or woman. Why are you proud of this?

“I’m gay and I’m proud!”
You were born with mental wiring that causes you to be attracted to the same sex. Woop dee doo.

“I wear a certain type of clothes and I’m proud!” - So you prefer to dress in one way rather than others. I wear white T-shirts and jeans every single day, should I be proud of this?

“I like ice cream and I’m proud!” - Lots of people like ice cream, and other foods. What’s your point?

“I’m a(n) <Insert sports team> fan and I’m proud!”
You can be proud of the team’s hard work I suppose, but you yourself likely don’t do anything that contributes to that, so simply being proud of being a fan is kind of ludicrous. You didn’t accomplish anything to attain this status, why are you proud of it?

And there’s just an endless amount of other examples I could use, but I think I’ve made my point. I simply don’t understand that phrase, or the use of the word “proud.”

Now, I know, I know context is key, but it still sounds ridiculous to me.

You should be proud of doing something, not being or liking something. To be proud of something you didn’t do or aid in the accomplishment of is just silly to me. Even parents can be proud of their kids when they get good grades because generally, they raised them in such a way that they worked for the good grades. Yes, the child’s own personal ambition can be the catalyst for such a desire for success, but that’s an entire other psychological conversation in and of itself. The point is, the parents very likely had a hand in causing the child to want to get good grades one way or another, hopefully not by cheating.

And I am now out of thoughts regarding this subject.
Bleah.
